Gender issues in inflammatory bowel diseases
This project combines results from quantitative analyses and qualitative approaches in order to investigate gender issues in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The objective is to identify and address the lack of research on gender issues in IBD.
Project description
As reported for other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, there are differences according to gender in the diagnosis delay and disease management of IBD. Recent studies show IBD-related health inequalities and research gaps among ethnic as well as sexual and gender minorities. A sex/gender bias is also observed among healthcare professionals trained in the sub-speciality of IBD.
Research aim
The main aims of this project will be to investigate how gender affects the health trajectory of IBD patients and to better understand how gender may affect knowledge production, medical practice and patients’ experiences. We will work on translating findings into scientific publications and formulating recommendations to be added when developing new teaching material for medical students, but also to be incorporated in postgraduate training courses and other educational activities.
Purpose
Alongside the expected results, the project will help generate and expand knowledge on sex/gender dimensions in IBD and derive up-to-date information to promote better consideration of sex/gender specificities in clinical practice. In addition, we will advocate for equitable incorporation of gender in healthcare and medical gastroenterological IBD sub-speciality training. To implement the project findings, we will liaise with a network of partners.
